Hemastix 50

Hemastix are rapid urinalysis reagent strips designed to screen for blood in urine (hematuria) at the point of care or at home. Each strip features a dedicated reagent pad that changes colour in the presence of haemoglobin’s pseudoperoxidase activity (and can also react with myoglobin), providing a quick visual result against the bottle’s colour chart. With a read time of about 60 seconds, Hemastix help flag when further clinical evaluation may be needed. This vial contains 50 single-use strips sealed with a desiccant to protect performance.

Active Reagents / Test Principle

  • Chromogen: 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)

  • Organic hydroperoxide (oxygen donor)

  • Buffer system and stabilisers on an absorbent pad
Principle: Haemoglobin (and myoglobin) catalyse the oxidation of TMB by an organic peroxide, producing a colour change from yellow to green/blue. Intensity correlates semi-quantitatively with the amount of blood present.

Reasons to Use

  • Rapid screening for blood in urine during routine checks or symptom review (e.g., visible blood, dysuria, flank discomfort).

  • Monitoring after exercise or procedures where transient hematuria may occur (with clinician guidance).

  • Convenient workflow: dip, wait ~60 seconds, compare with chart.

  • Compact 50-strip vial suitable for home, workplace, clinic, or outreach use.

Reasons Not to Use

  • Do not use strips that are expired, discoloured, or stored without the cap/desiccant.

  • Not for diagnosis or screening of disease without medical oversight—abnormal results require professional assessment.

  • Contaminated samples (e.g., menstrual blood, oxidising cleaners like bleach) can distort results—collect a clean midstream specimen.

  • Not designed for other body fluids or non-urine testing.

Advantages

  • Fast visual result (~60 s) with easy colour comparison.

  • Sensitive to haemoglobin and myoglobin—useful first-line screen.

  • Single-parameter pad minimises cross-reading confusion.

  • No instrumentation required.

Disadvantages

  • Semi-quantitative only; cannot determine exact concentration.

  • Interferences may cause false positives/negatives (see FAQ).

  • Requires fresh urine, correct timing, and controlled storage for reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I use Hemastix correctly?
A: Collect a fresh midstream urine sample in a clean container. Briefly dip the reagent pad into urine, remove, and wipe the edge on the container to remove excess. Hold the strip horizontally. Read at ~60 seconds by comparing the pad to the colour chart on the vial. Do not interpret after 2 minutes.

Q: Do I need to fast or use a specific time of day?
A: First-morning urine is often recommended because it is more concentrated, but any fresh sample can be used unless your clinician advises otherwise.

Q: What can cause a false positive?
A: Menstrual contamination, urine contaminated with oxidising agents (e.g., bleach disinfectants), or strong microbial peroxidase activity can yield positive colour changes even without true hematuria.

Q: What can cause a false negative?
A: High ascorbic acid (vitamin C) intake, very concentrated urine (high specific gravity), or improper timing (reading too early/late) can suppress the colour change.

Q: What if the strip shows positive but no red cells are seen on microscopy?
A: The pad detects haem-based peroxidase activity and may indicate haemoglobinuria or myoglobinuria. This requires clinical follow-up.

Q: How sensitive is the test?
A: Hemastix are designed to detect trace amounts of blood. The colour block scale (trace to large) is semi-quantitative and for screening only.

Q: How should I store the strips?
A: Keep tightly capped with the desiccant inside, at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Do not touch the reagent pad with wet fingers.

Q: How long are strips good for once opened?
A: Use before the expiry date and within the in-use period stated on the label. Reseal promptly after removing a strip.

Q: Can I cut the strips or reuse them?
A: No. Strips are single-use and must not be cut or reused.

Q: Do I need quality controls?
A: For professional settings, verify performance with positive/negative control solutions per your local protocol. For home use, follow the instructions closely and consult a health professional about unexpected results.

Q: When should I seek medical advice?
A: Any positive result, persistent urinary symptoms (pain, frequency, visible blood), or inconsistent findings should be discussed with a health professional promptly.

Q: Safety tips?
A: Wear gloves when handling urine. Discard used strips and specimens per local hygiene guidance.
