The branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine are unique among amino acids in that they are primarily metabolised extrahepatically in skeletal muscle. BCAA€™s are the only three amino acids to possess a branched side chain. They are all essential amino acids and collectively form the largest pool of essential amino acids in the bodily pool (35-40%) and are present in high levels (15-18%) in muscle tissue. BCAA€™s serve an important role in the brain in regulating nitrogen metabolism and glutamine synthesis.
