About this product
Bisalax 5mg 200 Tablets is an oral bisacodyl 5 mg enteric-coated tablet used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation in adults and children 10 years and over. Supplied in Australia by Orion Pharma (AUS) Pty Limited. Use it in accordance with the carton instructions and your healthcare professional's advice.
About the active
Bisacodyl 5 mg
Bisacodyl is a synthetic stimulant laxative of the diphenylmethane class. Following oral administration the enteric-coated tablet passes intact through the stomach and is hydrolysed in the colon to its active metabolite, which stimulates colonic peristalsis and increases colonic fluid secretion.
Onset is typically 6 to 12 hours after an oral dose, supporting overnight dosing.
Indicated for the short-term relief of occasional constipation in adults and children 10 years and over (under supervision for children), and for bowel evacuation prior to certain medical procedures.
Safety: do not use continuously for more than 7 days without medical advice — chronic laxative use can lead to dependence and electrolyte disturbance. Do not use in suspected appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, undiagnosed abdominal pain, or severe dehydration. Swallow tablets whole with water — do not crush, chew or take with milk or antacids (this can damage the enteric coating and cause stomach upset). Discuss with a pharmacist or doctor if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications.
