About the active

Azelaic Acid 150 mg/g (15%)

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring, saturated dicarboxylic acid produced in trace amounts by the yeast Malassezia furfur, a normal resident of human skin. In pharmaceutical use it is a defined-purity compound formulated as a hydrogel for topical application.

On the skin, azelaic acid normalises keratinisation of follicular epithelium and has activity against the surface bacteria associated with inflammatory papules and pustules of facial rosacea. It is not a corticosteroid.

Indicated for the topical treatment of inflammatory papules and pustules of mild to moderate facial rosacea, and for the topical treatment of mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris.

Safety: Schedule 4 (Prescription Only). Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin twice daily. Avoid the eyes, lips and mucous membranes — rinse with copious water if accidental contact occurs. Mild stinging, burning or itch on first application is common and usually subsides. Discuss pregnancy with the prescriber. Not recommended in breastfeeding without medical advice. Use of cosmetics and sunscreen over treated skin is generally acceptable.
