Mölnlycke Mepilex Border Flex Self-Adherent Silicone Foam Dressing 7.5 × 7.5 cm – 10 Pack

Mepilex Border Flex is an all-in-one, self-adherent silicone foam dressing engineered for conformability, secure hold and gentle removal. The unique multi-layer construction manages exudate while the soft silicone contact layer (Safetac-style technology) seals the wound margins to help reduce maceration and pain on dressing change. The Flex design stretches and adapts to body movement, making it ideal for mobile or contoured areas such as elbows, ankles and sacrum edges. Showerproof, breathable and designed for wear time up to several days depending on exudate, this 7.5 × 7.5 cm size suits smaller wounds or post-procedure sites. Individually sterile-wrapped; 10 dressings per box.

Active Materials / Construction

  • Soft silicone adhesive contact layer – atraumatic adherence to surrounding skin; gentle removal

  • Absorbent polyurethane foam pad – cushions and draws exudate from the wound bed

  • Spreading/transport layer – distributes fluid across the pad

  • Retention layer (superabsorbent core) – locks exudate away to help prevent leakage and maceration

  • Breathable, showerproof film backing – moisture vapour permeable, bacteria and fluid resistant

Reasons to Use

  • Exuding wounds: pressure injuries, leg and foot ulcers, skin tears, traumatic wounds, donor sites, post-operative or dehisced wounds (as clinically appropriate)

  • To minimise pain and skin damage at dressing changes on fragile or ageing skin

  • Difficult-to-dress or mobile sites needing a flexible, conformable bordered foam

  • Situations where fewer changes and showerproof wear improve comfort and care efficiency

  • Can be used under compression therapy where indicated

Reasons Not to Use

  • Allergy/sensitivity to silicone or any dressing component

  • Third-degree burns, heavy bleeding, or untreated clinical infection without professional oversight

  • Deep cavity/undermined wounds that require a cavity filler (use an appropriate primary dressing and consider Mepilex Border Flex as a secondary cover if advised)

  • Do not use if the sterile pack is opened or damaged; single use only

  • Avoid contact with oxidising agents (e.g., hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide) on the dressing unless directed, as they may degrade components

Advantages

  • Atraumatic removal helps reduce pain and protects periwound skin

  • 360° Flex conformability for a secure fit on moving body parts

  • 5-layer exudate management locks fluid away to help reduce leakage and maceration

  • Showerproof, breathable backing supports extended wear (change by exudate level/assessment)

  • All-in-one bordered design (no additional fixation usually required)

Disadvantages

  • Not intended as the sole treatment for heavily infected wounds

  • Very high exudate may shorten wear time or require more absorbent formats

  • Bordered foams add bulk compared with thin films on very low-exudate wounds

  • Cutting the dressing can compromise the border seal—only trim if a clinician advises

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I apply it?
A: Cleanse the wound, dry the surrounding skin, and choose a size with at least 2 cm overlap onto healthy skin. Remove the liners and apply without stretch, smoothing the border for a full seal.

Q: How often should I change it?
A: Change based on exudate levels, condition of the wound and skin, or per your clinician’s plan. Many patients wear a bordered foam for up to several days when exudate is controlled.

Q: Can I shower with it on?
A: Yes. The film backing is showerproof. Gently pat dry afterwards and check the border seal.

Q: Is it suitable for skin tears and fragile skin?
A: Yes. The soft silicone contact layer is designed to minimise trauma to delicate periwound skin during removal.

Q: Can it be used under compression bandaging?
A: Yes, when clinically appropriate. Ensure the dressing lies flat with a full border seal before applying compression.

Q: What if the wound is infected?
A: Seek professional review. Your clinician may pair this dressing with appropriate antimicrobials or choose an alternative until the infection is managed.

Q: May I cut the dressing to fit?
A: Avoid cutting unless your healthcare professional advises how to maintain the border’s integrity and seal.

Q: Any tips to reduce maceration?
A: Ensure good edge seal, choose the right size, and change the dressing before saturation. Protect the periwound with barrier film if recommended.

Q: Is it sterile and latex-free?
A: Each dressing is sterile, single-use. Patient-contacting components are latex-free.

Q: Disposal and storage?
A: Discard used dressings as clinical waste per local protocol. Store in a cool, dry place below the temperature stated on pack; keep pouches sealed until use.

Always follow your clinician’s instructions and local wound-care protocols. If signs of infection, increased pain, or deterioration occur, seek professional review promptly.
